A Collect for Aid against Perils

Each night we pray A Collect for Aid against Perils in Evening Prayer.
It goes like this:
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen

We don't always know when we are praying, what types of perils and dangers are out there. As modern Americans, we may struggle to take prayers like this seriously. However, as we drove through some of the tornado damage last Sunday, we were keenly aware of God's protection. In fact, it is amazing that no one was killed in the tornadoes that hit Dallas on the night of October 20, 2019. For us, we were reminded once again that an RV is not the safest place to live. We are reliant on warning signals and having time to run to the brick bathhouse which may or may not withstand the storm. Still, our lives are in God's hands. We are thankful for the shelter we have. We are trusting Him to continue to provide for and protect us throughout life's journey.

October has been a bit of a crazy month! We enjoyed a visit from Ed's parents who drove from their new home in Rogers City, MI to visit for a week. Their visit coincided with Esther's fall break. It also coincided with Ed's October class weekend. He had the privilege of being taught by Fr. Frank Levi, who was our pastor at St. Andrew's, Tinley Park, IL. (We attended St. Andrew's once per month our last couple years in Janesville.) Ed's dad was able to sit in with Ed on Fr. Levi's very helpful class on  Christian Apologetics (defense of the faith). Ed is now beginning work on the paper for that class. Just this week he completed the coursework for his September class and also took his Hebrew mid-term.

The last day of Phil and Sheree's visit, I woke up with a face swollen to 3 times its normal size. A visit to the Dr. confirmed I was having an allergic reaction to something, but what? Well, after a very miserable weekend we realized it was poison ivy! Esther and I had gotten into it on the bike trail. Esther had a very small patch on her arm, but I was covered. I am still recovering!

Esther continues to enjoy kindergarten. Every day is a new adventure for her. I have been able to go in at lunch each day and help the kids go through the lunch line. They have a lot of choices to make. It is a fun way to volunteer and connect with Esther each day. All-day kindergarten is long. She is very independent and confident, but she still likes her mom!

  1. Aaiii... poison ivy! Some people are very allergic - will pray for continued recovery.
Yes, perils are everywhere and here in the US, we are often oblivious and numb to the rest of the world. Our prayers, our conversations with our Lord keep us connected while helping to keep our focus off ourselves. Love hearing from you and how everyone is doing. Stay wrapped in His Love and Care.
