All the way across Spain (in the footsteps of pilgrims)

It all started when Ed read this section in the Middle School History book this past fall. He started dreaming of walking this way of pilgrimage which has been walked since medieval times. The Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) has become increasingly popular due to recent movies and adventure travel. In the medieval time period, Christians from all over traveled from their homes to the Santiago de Compostela, the burial place of St. James. Most often their reasons for taking this burden upon themselves was for penance or healing.
All along the route are cathedrals, monasteries and hospitaleros (where the pilgrims would stay). Some are in ruin, some remain. Alongside them are modern hostels, albergues (rustic bed and breakfast), and restaurants. All are there, because this way is there.
On June 11th, we'll start in St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, making our way through the famous Roncevaux Pass where Charlemagne's army was ambushed. This is one of few places to pass through the formidable Pyrenees Mountains. The three of us plan to trek the full 500 mile French Way in 37 stages. We've planned rest days on Sundays. Our average distance is 21 km per day (13 miles). We hope to share our journey with you!
